May 22nd – 23rd | Eckehard Stier conducting Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo
Eckehard Stier will conduct the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana at the Politeama Garibaldi in Palermo for two concerts dedicated to the music of Antonio Scontrino, with Nicola Malagugini as double bass soloist.
The programme features Scontrino’s Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, one of the most significant Italian works dedicated to the instrument. Written in 1901, the concerto combines virtuosic writing with lyrical intensity, highlighting the expressive and technical possibilities of the double bass.
The second part of the evening is dedicated to the Sinfonia Marinaresca, a large symphonic work inspired by the sea and deeply connected to the Sicilian composer’s origins. Through its four movements (Mare Calmo, Nell’Isola delle Scimmie, Canto delle Sirene and Tempesta) the symphony explores evocative maritime landscapes with rich orchestral colours and a strong programmatic character.
