biography

Young Armenian baritone Gagik Vardanyan is currently a soloist of the Young Artist Program at the Armenian National Opera. In Yerevan his repertoire includes Belcore L'elisir d'amore, Don Alvaro Il viaggio a reims and as upcoming new roles Sharpless Madama Butterfly, Schaunard and Marcelo La boheme and Germont La Traviata.
With the Estonian National Opera he made his role debut as Germont La Traviata in November and December 2023. Among the most recent accomplishments in June 2024 Gagik Vardanyan has been one of the winners of 5th Edition of the International Singing Competition “SOI – Scuola dell’Opera Italiana Fiorenza Cedolins”. Two days later the final he has been invited to perform in a lyric-symphonic gala entitled "Great Voices of the Future", accompanied by the FVG Orchestra and conducted by Giuliano Carella.

He was a member of the opera studio at Staatsoper Hannover from 2019 until 2022. There he performed Zaretsky Eugene Onegin, Marullo Rigoletto, Officer, Fiorello Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Melot Tristan und Isolde and the baritone solo in the production Stimmen: Liebeslieder.

Gagik Vardanyan obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan. He sang his first roles Marullo Rigoletto and Il Commissario Madama Butterfly in productions of the Aram Khachaturyan Concert Hall. As an invited soloist in the Opera for Peace Academy 2023 he sang in concert with Sumi JoEtienne Dupuis and Kamal Khan. He participated in the masterclasses of Renée Fleming and Neil Shicoff and appeared as a soloist with the Kaunas Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Constantine Orbelian.

Successful at several competitions, he was awarded 3rd prize at the Klaudia Taev Competition 2023, 5th prize at the Ottavio Ziino Competition 2023, 1st prize at the Manhattan International Music Competition 2020, 1st prize at the ISCART competition 2020, Special prize at the Tenor Viñas Competition 2019, Special prize at the Eva Marton Competition 2018, 3rd prize at the Aram Khachaturian Competition 2017, 1st prize at the Tatevik Sazandaryan Competition 2017 and 1st prize at the Veratsnund international competition 2013.

Among his future engagements (2024-2025) Gagik Vardanyan will be featured in a Gala at the Estonian National Opera (August 2024); we will be performing in the roles of Escamillo in Carmen by G. Bizet (September 2024) and Malatesta in Don Pasquale by G. Donizetti (October 2024) at the Estonian National Opera; he will performing in La Traviata by G. Verdi at the Angers Nantes Opera (January 2025) and he will be Amonasdro in Aida by G. Verdi at the Grand Opera Avignon (October 2025).
