biography

Gyehee Kim has emerged as one of the leading violinists of her generation, celebrated for her expressive depth, technical brilliance, and luminous tone. “Remarkable artistry and sophistication” was how the critic described her sold-out performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with the George Enescu Philharmonic at the Romanian Athenaeum, conducted by Christian Badea. Gyehee Kim returned to the George Enescu Philharmonic as soloist for the world premiere of Dan Dediu’s BrahmsodiaTriple Concerto at the 2020 George Enescu International Festival under Josep Caballé Domenech, praised for her “masterful execution of a complex, multi-layered work.”

Kim has collaborated with leading orchestras worldwide, including Les Musiciens du Louvre under Marc Minkowski in Paris, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, Los Angeles iPalpiti Ensemble, Toruń Symphony (Poland), Central Aichi Symphony Orchestra (Japan), Macao Orchestra, Bulgaria Pleven Philharmonic, Poland Sudetic Philharmonic, and Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana (Italy). She has also appeared at prestigious festivals such as the Rostropovich Festival with the Moscow Philharmonic, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, Russian Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, and the Novosibirsk State Opera Orchestra’s Chamber Ensemble.
She has performed alongside world-renowned conductors, including Valery Gergiev and Charles Dutoit, as well as distinguished soloists and chamber musicians such as Hilary Hahn, Yuri Bashmet, Jaime Laredo, Denis Matsuev, Nils Mönkemeyer, Christoph Poppen, Alexander Rudin, Eckart Runge, Soyoung Yoon, and William Youn.
Kim’s performances have taken her to renowned venues and festivals across the globe, including Salle Gaveau in Paris, Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, Kumho Art Hall in Seoul, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Kirchner Cultural Centre in Buenos Aires, the Kronberg Academy Festival in Germany, Windsor Festival in the UK, The Stars on Baikal festival with Denis Matsuev, and the Grand Kremlin Palace Festival in Moscow.
She was named Music Journal’s 2023 New Artist of the Year and nominated for Artist of the Kumho in South Korea in 2024. She was previously selected for the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation’s prestigious Rising Star Series, a program highlighting South Korea’s most promising young musicians.
Internationally recognized for her artistry and virtuosity, Kim won First Prize at the George Enescu International Competition in 2016 and First Prize, along with the Gold Medal, at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, establishing her as one of the foremost violinists of her generation. Her other accolades include prizes at the International Violin Competition Andrea Postacchini (Italy), the Munetsugu Angel Violin Competition (Japan), the Gnessin International Competition, and the Stuttgart, Toruń, Isang Yun, and Tchaikovsky Competitions for Young Musicians.
Kim studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Joseph Silverstein before earning her Bachelor’s degree at Seoul National University under her lifelong mentor Young Uck Kim. She then completed both her Master’s and Meisterklasse degrees at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with Christoph Poppen and Lena Neudauer.
