March 12th – 15th | Lü Jia conducts the new opera “The Red Sorghum” at NCPA Beijing
Following the successful world premiere in 2025, Lü Jia returns to conduct “The Red Sorghum” at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing.
Commissioned by the NCPA, the opera is based on Red Sorghum Clan by Nobel Prize-winning author Mo Yan and tells the powerful story of Dai Fenglian, Yu Zhan’ao and the villagers of Gaomi during the War of Resistance. With a libretto written by Mo Yan himself and music by renowned composer Guo Wenjing, the work combines regional musical elements with symphonic breadth, creating a contemporary opera of epic scale.
Under the direction of Wang Xiaodi and the musical leadership of Lü Jia, Music and Artistic Director of the NCPA, the production brings together the NCPA Orchestra, the China NCPA Chorus and an outstanding cast, reaffirming the opera’s place in today’s repertoire.
A significant contemporary Chinese opera led by Lü Jia at one of Asia’s most prestigious cultural institutions.
