Marcus Bosch

November 14th – 15th | Marcus Bosch – “Der Ring ohne Worte” in Palermo

At the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi di Palermo, conductor Marcus Bosch leads an evocative symphonic program that brings together the Nordic atmospheres of Edvard Grieg and the monumental musical architecture of Richard Wagner.

The concert opens with Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46, drawn from Grieg’s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play. Through its four movements — Morning Mood, The Death of Åse, Anitra’s Dance, and In the Hall of the Mountain King— the composer creates a vivid sonic narrative that alternates pastoral serenity, lyrical melancholy, and folkloric exuberance.

The evening continues with Wagner’s “Der Ring ohne Worte”, an extraordinary symphonic synthesis conceived in 1987 by Lorin Maazel in collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker. This “Ring without words” distills the essence of Wagner’s monumental tetralogy — Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung — into a single orchestral journey. Without the use of voices, Maazel’s arrangement unveils the full symphonic depth of Wagner’s writing, from the iconic Ride of the Valkyries to Siegfried’s Funeral March, in an uninterrupted flow of musical drama.
