Marcus Bosch, Verdi’s “Alzira” Reconsidered – A New Recording Brings Forgotten Opera to Life

A new review on Gramophone Magazine sheds light on one of Verdi’s least-known operas, Alzira, brought vividly to life in a recent recording from the Heidenheim Opera Festival.

Described as Verdi’s most obscure work, Alzira is here rediscovered through a compelling live performance conducted by our Marcus Bosch, with Cappella Aquileia and the Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno. Gramophone praises Bosch’s interpretation for its rhythmic articulation and forceful Verdian energy, which offers a fresh perspective on a score that is often overlooked.

The review notes that, although the opera itself contains dramatic inconsistencies and unconventional choices, the recording succeeds in highlighting its musical richness—from the Mendelssohnian overture to the brooding Act II prelude.

Singers Sung Kyu Park, Marian Pop, and Ania Jeruc are recognised for their passionate, if occasionally unrefined, performances, which contribute to what the magazine calls a “go-for-broke performance manner” that fits well within the opera’s hyper-dramatic context.

Above all, Gramophone emphasises Marcus Bosch’s capacity to give shape and meaning to Verdi’s lesser-known material, turning Alzira into an engaging listen for both dedicated opera lovers and new audiences.
