Marcus Bosch

March 1st – 3rd | Marcus Bosch with pianist Fabio Martino & Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock

The 6th Philharmonisches Konzert of the season, titled “Dramen”, brings together powerful symphonic works spanning Russia and Brazil, exploring intense emotional landscapes and striking musical contrasts.

On the podium, our artist Marcus Bosch will lead the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock, joined by pianist Fabio Martino.

The programme opens with Peter Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet – Fantasy Overture (1869/70), regarded as his first fully accomplished orchestral masterpiece. Inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy and encouraged by his mentor Mili Balakirev, Tchaikovsky created a richly coloured symphonic poem that blends dramatic tension with lyrical themes and distinctly Russian sonorities.

Mozart Camargo Guarnieri’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (1946) follows, combining Brazilian rhythmic vitality with symphonic strength. The concerto highlights the refined artistry of Fabio Martino, praised for his nuanced sensitivity and expressive intensity, in a work that bridges national identity and universal musical language.

The evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 “Pathétique”, his final symphony and one of his most personal creations. Sketched in just a few days in Klin and premiered in 1893 shortly before the composer’s sudden death, the symphony remains enigmatic in its underlying programme. Its emotional range moves from determination and hope to love, disillusionment and despair, ending unusually with a subdued and mournful finale, a closing gesture that continues to move and intrigue audiences to this day.
