Oleg Caetani and Charlie Siem’s Brahms Violin Concerto acclaimed by Gramophone Magazine
Violinist Charlie Siem and conductor Oleg Caetani return with a new recording of Brahms’s Violin Concerto, released by Signum Classics, which has recently received an enthusiastic review from Gramophone Magazine. Their collaboration, following the earlier success of their Beethoven recording, is once again praised for its musical coherence and interpretative depth.
The review highlights the duo’s chamber-like approach to Brahms, avoiding overblown romanticism in favour of clarity, elegance and dialogue. Critics appreciated the “salt-beef sandwich” quality of the interpretation: sharp, focused and full of character—offering a refreshing alternative to traditional renditions.
One of the album's most distinctive features is Siem’s performance of George Enescu’s first-movement cadenza, a technically demanding and highly expressive addition rarely heard in modern recordings. Siem’s precision and musical insight, paired with Caetani’s attentive support, bring a unique historical and interpretative perspective to this masterpiece.
The album also includes Enescu’s Aria and Scherzino, adding a lyrical and virtuosic touch to the release, and concluding a project that Gramophone calls “a rewarding new take on the Brahms.”
