May 11th | Oleg Caetani conducts Suzhou Symphony Orchestra at SCAC Grand Theatre
The distinguished Italian conductor Oleg Caetani will lead the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra at the SCAC Grand Theatre in a compelling programme dedicated to Schubert and Shostakovich.
The evening opens with Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, D. 485, often called the “Symphony without drums and trumpets” for its light orchestration and delicate homage to Mozart’s musical style. The work reveals Schubert’s exceptional melodic gift combined with a unique "retro" elegance.
Following, the orchestra will perform Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15 in A Major, Op. 141, a rich, multifaceted work that blends irony, nostalgia, and deep emotional resonance. Shostakovich intertwines references to Rossini’s William Tell Overture and Wagner’s operas, creating a soundscape that transitions from childlike fantasy to sharp commentary on reality.
Program: - F. Schubert, Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, D. 485 - D. Shostakovich, Symphony No. 15 in A Major, Op. 141
