Yibai Chen

July 12th | Yibai Chen performing D. Shostakovich Cello concerto No. 2 with Xi’an Symphony Orchestra and Zhang Guoyong

The Xi’an Symphony Orchestra presents an evocative evening at the Xi’an Concert Hall, inaugurating a special concert series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s passing. Under the baton of conductor Zhang Guoyong, the evening highlights Shostakovich’s compelling and emotionally charged orchestral writing.

Cellist Yibai Chen joins the orchestra for the Cello Concerto No. 2 in G Major, Op. 126, a work rich in introspection and complexity. This concerto, less frequently performed than its predecessor, offers a profound journey through haunting lyricism and sardonic undertones, perfectly suited to Chen’s depth and expressive playing.

This concert marks the first chapter of “Commemorating Shostakovich” – a tribute series by the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, reaffirming the timeless relevance of the composer’s legacy.
