Argentine tenor Carlos Natale has received widespread critical acclaim for his portrayal of Frontino in Gioachino Rossini’s “L’equivoco stravagante”, presented at the 2026 Wexford Festival Opera in Ireland.
The production, directed by Max Hoehn and conducted by Riccardo Bisatti, forms part of the festival’s 75th anniversary celebrations. Natale’s performance has attracted particular praise for its comic timing, theatrical characterisation and vocal accomplishment.
The Stage highlighted Natale’s ability to maximise the comic potential of his role, while The Times awarded “Top marks to Carlos Natale’s sinister Frontino.”
In The Irish Times, critic Michael Dervan described Natale and soprano Kelli-Ann Masterson, performing as Frontino and Rosalia, as “a class act”, recognising their effectiveness as the opera’s scheming servants.
Similarly, Bachtrack praised the pair for their accomplished singing and carefully judged comic performances, while Stage Door highlighted their complementary vocal and acting styles.
The international critical response also extended to Italian, French and German publications. Ape Musicale praised Natale’s distinctive comic personality and the effectiveness of his acting, while Anaclase highlighted his assured performance, particularly in the lively recitatives.
German publication Online Musik Magazin commended Natale’s theatrical wit, particularly in the second-act scene in which Frontino deceives Buralicchio, emphasising his ability to bring out the humour of Rossini’s writing.
Across these reviews, Natale emerges as a compelling interpreter of Frontino, combining vocal precision with an engaging stage presence and a strong understanding of Rossini’s comic language.
