Critical acclaim for Rory Musgrave in Mark Simpson’s The Immortal at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Our baritone Rory Musgrave has received positive critical attention for his performance as the soloist in Mark Simpson’s “The Immortal” at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Daniela Candillari.
In its review of the performance, Arts City Liverpool praised Candillari’s command of the score while highlighting Rory Musgrave’s contribution, describing him as the “possessor of a sonorous bass-baritone” and noting the space and stillness he brought to the work’s reflective solo passages.
A second review published by The Guardian also singled out Rory Musgrave, referring to him as an “excellent soloist” in Simpson’s powerful oratorio.
Mark Simpson’s The Immortal, with libretto by Melanie Challenger, explores themes of spiritualism, grief and the afterlife in a dramatic and highly charged musical language. In this intense setting, Rory Musgrave’s performance stood out for its vocal presence and dramatic focus.
