August 16th | Lü Jia conducting “Petit and Delicacy” at NCPA Beijing
Lü Jia conducts the China NCPA Orchestra in “Petit and Delicacy”, a programme bringing together works by Richard Strauss, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
The concert opens with Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 11, featuring Youngjong Koh as soloist. Written when Strauss was still a teenager, the concerto combines lyrical writing with brilliant virtuosity across its three connected movements.
The programme continues with Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 in F minor “Serioso”, Op. 95, heard in Gustav Mahler’s arrangement for string orchestra.
After the interval, LÜ Jia leads the orchestra in two works by Tchaikovsky: the Andante Cantabile and the Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48, one of the composer’s best-known works for string ensemble.
