May 10th – 12th | Marcus Bosch conducting Shostakovich cello concerto with Alban Gerhardt in Rostock
Marcus Bosch will conduct the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock for the 9th Philharmonic Concert, titled “Endlich”.
The programme is dedicated to Dmitri Shostakovich and features Alban Gerhardt as soloist in the composer’s Cello Concerto No. 2, Op. 126. Written for Mstislav Rostropovich and premiered in Moscow in 1966, the concerto is one of Shostakovich’s most distinctive works for cello and orchestra, marked by irony, ambiguity and expressive depth.
The concert will continue with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65, composed in 1943. Far from being a celebratory response to wartime victory, the symphony unfolds as a work of pain, mourning and despair, ending without a triumphant conclusion.
The evening will also include the premiere of the winning orchestral encore from the Zugabe 3’ 33’’ competition, initiated by Marcus Bosch together with hmt Rostock.
