After his success at Wexford Festival Opera, Rory Musgrave will perform the role of Fenice in George Frideric Handel’s Deidamia at the Göttingen International Handel Festival.

Handel’s final Italian opera follows the story of Achilles, hidden on the island of Skyros and disguised as a girl in order to escape his fate in the Trojan War. At the centre of the opera is Deidamia, daughter of King Lycomedes and beloved of Achilles, whose love is placed against the call of heroic destiny.

In this tragicomic work, Handel brings together pastoral scenes, secret love, playful disguise and moments of dramatic tension, creating a score of psychological depth and rich orchestral colour.

The production is conducted by George Petrou and features the FestspielOrchester Göttingen, the Kammerchor der Universität Göttingen and a cast including Sophie Junker as Deidamia, Bruno de Sá as Achille, Nicolò Balducci as Ulisse, Sarah Gilford as Nerea, our Rory Musgrave as Fenice and Petros Magoulas as Licomede.

The production is a co-production with Wexford Festival Opera.
