February 13th | Yibai Chen performing with Orquestra Clássica de Espinho
The Orquestra Clássica de Espinho presents a concert unified by a single tonal centre: C major. Under the musical direction of Pedro Neves, and with our cellist Yibai Chen as soloist, the programme explores the expressive breadth of this key across different eras and stylistic languages.
The evening brings together two contrasting cello concertos, both in C major. Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 exemplifies Classical balance and transparency, with an almost chamber-like dialogue between soloist and orchestra. In contrast, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Cello Concerto reveals a richly orchestral, cinematic sound world, demonstrating how the same key can support a vastly different expressive vocabulary.
The programme concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter”, also in C major. As Mozart’s final symphony, it stands as a synthesis of Viennese Classicism, combining brilliance, structural clarity, and contrapuntal mastery.
Program: - E. W. Korngold, Cello Concerto in C major, Op. 37 - J. Haydn, Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major, Hob. VIIb:1 - W. A. Mozart, Symphony No. 41 in C major, “Jupiter”, K. 551
