Yibai Chen

November 22nd | Yibai Chen with Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra

Cellist Yibai Chen performs Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in G major, Op. 126 with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Yang Yang, at the Symphony Hall, Xinghai Concert Hall. The event commemorates the 50th anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich’s death.

The program brings together three works by the great Russian composer — the Cello Concerto No. 2, Selections from The Gadfly Suite, and the Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70 — alongside Snowy Reverie by Alantanamoi, an emerging composer from the NCPA Young Composer Program.

Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2 reflects the introspective and somber tone of the composer’s late style, while The Gadfly Suite offers moments of lyricism and warmth. The concert concludes with his Ninth Symphony, a work filled with wit and lightness, in striking contrast to the grandeur of his previous symphonies.
